It lies not in our power to love or hate,
For will in us is overruled by fate.
When two are stripped, long ere the course begin,
We wish that one should lose, the other win;
And one especially do we affect
Of two gold ingots, like in each respect:
The reason no man knows; let it suffice
What we behold is censured by our eyes.
Where both deliberate, the love is slight:
Who ever loved, that loved not at first sight?

Some have kindly asked about flowers in anticipation of Claire's funeral, this Friday (31st July). Instead and if minded to do so, we're suggesting charitable donations. And identified two; the Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, being local and representative of her loves for the outdoors and creative design. If you copy and paste this link, then open the 'Upcoming and Recent Funerals' page and look for Claire Goldsmith, on-line donations are nice and simple:

Legally Blond! Three years ago this week we were in Manchester celebrating Naomi's law degree. Today, in not the easiest of circumstances, she got a very distinctive set of Law School results. Not sure I can survive another after-party like the last.

Dear James and family
I am so sorry to hear the news about Claire. Claire was our wedding photographer 10 years ago in Brighton; it was a last minute wedding and I didnt actually meet Claire until the big day, but as soon as I met her it felt like I had known her for years. We met up with Claire a couple of years later when we came to your old house for photos with our dog, photos we now cherish as she passed away quite recently. We were due to meet Claire again in Brighton last year for some family photos when we got the shocking news of the accident. I'm sure she would have loved to meet our children and to have gone full circle on this journey with us, but sadly it wasnt to be. I'm so grateful to have met Claire, and will treasure her photos always, not just because it was our wedding but because of how special she made us feel. From reading all your updates she is obviously an amazing mother and will take inspiration from her as I try and navigate motherhood. You are an incredible family, and I send you so much love and support during this time. With love, Holly and Dan Gill

I only found out today.
I met Claire once - out for a day's ride with her and Tom - she was such fun on that day and left a lasting impression on me of someone extremely creative and with a joy for life (and a great sense of humour). Tom always seems so proud of her and it was obvious why.
Wishing the whole family all the strength they need.

It was twelve months ago today that I was working in my office on a glorious sunny day (much like today) when I received a phone call from James which would change my life. He was in the back of a taxi heading to St. George’s Hospital and told me that my little sister, Claire had been involved in a cycling accident and had been airlifted to hospital with injuries that could prove to be ā€œlife changingā€. Unfortunately those two simple words have proved to be so true not only for Claire but also for all of us. Back then I could never have imagined where we would all find ourselves a year later. Life is certainly so very different for all of us. Not only have we all survived a year of what I can only describe as grieving, but on top of all that we also find ourselves in unprecedented times in coronavirus lock-down. Whilst this is preventing us all from physically being together with Claire, one thing is for sure, we are undoubtedly even closer now as a family than we were twelve months ago. I am forever an optimist and seeing the good in even the worst circumstances. I am reminded by something that my friend Simon said to me when Dad passed away. After loosing his little sister, Claire’s childhood friend Alison, he described life being like walking through a tunnel, but eventually light will appear at the end of the darkness and that light will become brighter and warmer. Whilst we are still travelling through that tunnel, I believe that the light will appear for all of us and it will indeed become brighter and warmer. I often think about happy memories of life with my little sister and often chuckle to myself as I remember such happy times. On this sunny Easter Day, I remember another Easter Day many years ago when Tom, Alfie, Naomi, Angus, Kate and Oliver were little children. We were all together at Whitegates and Claire, in her inevitable way, had organised an Easter Egg Hunt around the back garden. Children were tearing around the garden finding Easter Eggs and bringing them back to put in a basket that Claire was holding, everyone that is except for Oliver. Despite searching alongside his sister and cousins he couldn’t find a single egg. Just as everyone else had decided that there were no more eggs to find, Oliver suddenly triumphed … he had found an egg and carried it back proudly to Claire who then burst out laughing and gave him a big hug … the egg was one left over from the previous years Easter Egg Hunt! Needless to say, Oliver was suitably rewarded. Happy Easter to you all and please keep searching for that light.

Dear Claire, how we would love to visit you, but Corona won't allow very sadly. It is April 1st today - your Dad's birthday- Peter would have been 83 today, so we remember him as well as thinking of you . For us in rural North Yorkshire, we are cheered by the beautiful signs of Spring all around us- flowers, baby lambs in the fields, birds singing and busy building nests, trees bursting into new green life. We know that although you are confined within the walls of RHN , everyone there will be doing their very best to look after you and salute them for their amazing care. Lots of love and big "virtual hugs", and God Bless, from Aunty Anne, Uncle Geoff, cousins Ben, Emma , Jenny and all their children. XX

Hello Headway family.

It's a message from Amsterdam. Sorry it's been a while, but I'm sure Naomi and Dad's updates have kept you all informed with regard to Mum.

One of Mum's old work friends and colleague got in touch with me the other day. After recently appearing on ITV's 'The Repair Shop' as a Goldsmith and diamond mounter, Richard had an editorial article feature in the RadioTimes 7-13 March edition. He was asked to include a photo of him working and opted for the ones Mum took of him. Photo credit of Mum was included alongside the picture.

If you recall, several months ago I posted a picture of a silver key ring with an inscription that Mum once gave me. Richard was the one who produced and inscribed that for Mum.

Amsterdam is treating me well (only one stolen bike so far), and a new canal-side apartment which catches the morning sun just fine. I've bought myself a museum card which allows me unlimited access to all the museums across Amsterdam for the rest of the year. I make the most of it, however can't help but feel sorry that Mum isn't there with me. I read the inscriptions and form my own understanding of the work, but there's always a part of me wondering: 'What would Mum say was the intention behind that painting?' 'What would Mum think of this sculptors work?' 'At what point would mum get a coffee from the museum cafe?'. The answer to that last question would of course, be before she'd even set foot in the exhibition.

All my love Headway family. Thank you for your continued support, both from myself, the family, and Mum x

Hi all, My name is Angela and I've been friends with Claire and her beautiful family for at least 25 years. I need your help. I’ve signed up for a 25kmThames Bridge Trek for Headway - Each step of the 25km will be for Claire. I am attempting to raise as much money as I can for this charity by taking part in the #ThamesBridgesTrek across London in September. I would like to raise at least Ā£350 and as part of the entry, I need to be able to show that I have raised at least half the amount six weeks before, hence the early appeal! All money pledged on the #JustGiving page goes directly to Headway. Any amount that anyone can sponsor me will be so gratefully received. Thanks for reading. The twins singing their hearts out at The Greatest Showman,

So.....this weekend I put on A Musical in a Day - Where 40 local people came along at 10am in the morning and we put on a 50 minute performance of The Greatest Showman at 7.30pm. It was a brilliant evening and, including monies taken last Monday at the Concert for Claire at The Royal Hospital, we raised a total of £2,218.84 for Headway. Here are a couple of photos from a truly very special and brilliant evening.

So the time has finally come, Mumma. I start Law School tomorrow! I feel totally unprepared having been set 28 hours’ worth of reading to do on Thursday. Tonight Dad and I had an al fresco burger up the road as it was so warm outside. I thought of you as you hate burgers... We’ve rearranged my new room and made it as homely as possible. It feels completely surreal though - there’s no other way to describe it. I can’t get my head around the fact that I have to get through this laborious Legal Practice Course without you by my side. No doubt that by now you’d have got a date in the diary to come to stay for a girly weekend - due to your own excitement but also so that I had something to look forward to. There’s such a huge chunk missing from this whole experience but I promise to give it everything I’ve got to make you proud. Miss you more than words could begin to say. Night night bestie šŸ’—

Waking up on Sunday morning I wondered for fully a minute "where are you?". I think the 24hrs Claire-filled preps and party had taken us into another place. Just for a lovely while. Seeing the pre-party debris and speaking notes on our dressing table. And then reality hits...

Anyway, your kids and friends did a more than brilliant job. Too many to mention (and also fear of missing someone out). And Naomi's words - yikes. The prefect segue for a party that went on until the early hours.

A watershed moment perhaps. 'New normal' now beckons.

Naomi's going to do a party update later. Phew... For now, a fair few have asked about Tom's toast, which was 'attitude and ambition'. Seven years ago to the day, Claire and Chris embarked upon an off-road 'Coast to Coast' crossing by bike. And as usual recorded it by photo and an album. At the end she put the Alfred Wainwright (famous fell walker, illustrator and author) quote from 1973:

“One should always have a definite objective, in a walk as in life - it is so much more satisfying to reach a target by personal effort than to wander aimlessly. An objective is an ambition, and life without ambition is ..... well, aimless wandering”.

The photo on the front cover of her album says it all...

Today honey was in every way like the first day of term. In so many ways. I guess in part being the first Monday of September. And a lovely, sunny one. Always my favourite month. All weekend the radio was going on about the first day of Autumn; by meteorological definition anyway - something I’ve never heard of before.

It may have more to do with me dropping off Martha for the week at Puppy Camp. I thought of you doing the same with kids when little on first day of the Autumn term. In their pristine school uniforms. Perhaps Martha was a little (though not too much) less pristine. Rather hopelessly I think I held back the tears, just as you used too. Jeez, metaphors abounded. It just made me reflect on all those short, late summer holidays we had. Before the kids went to school. In Devon and the Isle of Wight. Always perfect weather and the beaches to ourselves. And especially I remembered those few days we had in Dorset, whilst you were heavily pregnant with Tom. I booked the Bed & Breakfasts (no ‘air’ on ’n’ then). We did Sherborne Abbey, Thomas Hardy’s cottage, Chesil Beach (numerous tea shops in btw obv!), and me unwisely windsurfing alone one evening in Kimmeridge Bay whilst you sat in the car parked on top of the cliff, knitting in the company of flask of tea. And the next day Sealife in Weymouth where we bought Tom’s dolphin (still pristine, v unlike the others’ Teddy and Herbie Hare). Then fish and chips before heading home to Richmond. And the rest of the week decorating the nursery (though never quite so grand for that definition); yellow we painted it, not knowing whether they were a boy or girl. It also makes me think of the children saying that the camping holidays were always the best. It didn’t always feel like it to us at the time! (let’s not repeat what Alfie said….). Though more than almost anything, I do remember you holding back the tears (not very well) as one year we started the drive back home around the Saunton headland. We got as far as Braunton, six miles later, where we stopped. Deciding on the spur that an early fish and chip (obv!) supper there was better than a Little Chef stop halfway. Easing our way back to what was then ‘normal’. Even though we knew it at the time, how good was ‘simple’….

So here we are. Not quite a generation on. Alfie has been back to Devon, twice, camping with Izzy and Isla. Tom and Frances plotting their next camping and climbing holiday, this time in Spain (his collar bone healing ok). Angus starting his new term in Amsterdam. And Naomi has, I hope, lucked out wth a house share in Clapham (that’s a story for another time, but wow I got nostalgic for us). Before she starts Law School next week. Taking a couple of days before to see Angus in Amsterdam. And we have your 'house warming’ party, this weekend. Naomi has shared already with me her ‘words’. She has your tone and eloquence. Also your fear (er, everyone’s) of speaking in public. She also has your determination.

So for your house warming party, Angus is sorting the playlist. I said start with Kingston Town. Thinking back to that weekend in Margate, just before the accident. And you dancing to this with abandon. But whilst going through the UB40 playlist, I also thought of this (that they didn’t play). It is more than appropriate for Angus in his current accommodation.

I booked the Bed & Breakfasts (no ā€˜air’ on ’n’ then). Dear James, Naomi, Tom, Alfie and Angus, Been thinking of you all over these past months, and sending you all and Claire our love and thoughts. Lite a few candles for Claire in some beautiful churches in Columbia over the summer. Wanted to pause and remember a beautiful person in a beautiful place. I'll email James to see when good to visit Claire. Would be nice to read to her and remember what an inspiration she was and is to us all. Sending much love Catherine and Alan Diamond

Alfie and Isla did Lego today. Not any old Lego. This was at the Tate Modern, where Claire took often the kids. The brilliant installation artist Olafur Eliasson dumped loads of white bricks so people could together build the 'City of the Future". Picture here that melts me was courtesy of Izzy. Dear Claire Archie and I bumped into Jan Groombridge and her husband recently and she explained about your accident some months ago. We We’re so so sorry to hear the awful news and you have been in my thoughts a lot since then. You are an amazing, lovely, strong woman and a fighter and somehow I feel sure that you will come through this in time. Until then, I’m still looking forward to that catch up cup of coffee we arranged on Christmas Eve via text. Sending our love to you, James, Tom, Alfie, Naomi and Angus. With ALL our good wishes Emma, Archie, Tom, Harry and Issy. X

We have only this evening realised what has happened to lovely Claire. The last few months must have been torture for you all. If there is a family that has the strength, the kindness, the closeness and the grit to pull together through this, it’s you, The Goldsmiths. We send you all of our love, support, hope & prayers from Devon. Claire loves the beaches in Devon, so I am sharing a photo for her. We know just what a strong and gifted woman Claire is and have no doubt of the effort and fight she will be putting into her recovery. You all are her everything, and that is what will be her strength, the sunlight encouraging her forward through the injury. If there is anything at all, any of us our able to do, we are more than happy to do it. In the meantime keep strong. Mark, Amy, Harry, Bethany & Charlie xxxxx

dear Naomi, lovely to hear your news and location update. Not sure if you received my last message from the Danube on our cruise but we do think of you very often and share your sadness. Cairns and the Daintree are wonderful places so do enjoy in spite of the sorrow of your dear Mum. Geoff and I are going to London for a one night stay soon and plan to visit Claire for a few hours on Tues Aug 6th. We do feel very far away and not able to visit often but be assured that Claire and Team G are never far from our thoughts and prayers. Do try and keep strong and hopeful. love from Anne. A huge Thank You to the Goldsmith's and current potentials for allowing us to share the Love Supreme festival with them. Ruth and I did our best to meet the rigorous standards established by Claire, though the hangover, lack of sleep, and buzzing ears may not have made up for our lame fashion choices and scarcity of body glitter. Judging by last years photos, Claire set the bar well out of my reach. However, Naomi and Angus, your tickets for next year are far from safe as Ruth's gold dragon fly wings have been ordered and I'm learning to walk past security clutching a gin bottle where the sun rarely shines. Love to you all. Ruth and Richard.

G'day Claire , James and family. Just to let you know you have been in our thoughts since the injury. We are wishing for the best progress possible, and note your very supportive and loving family and friends. Inspired by our bicycle trip together in Morocco, 2018, Marie and I recently completed a two week cycle trip in Mustang, Nepal, riding North and up, to the border with Tibet . Trust that our best wishes transmitted from those high vantages, and ongoing wishes and thoughts from Ballina, Australia. With Love and respect , David Sare & Marie Jeffery [ married March 2019 ]

Well, we're in honey. At least for now. The place you'd been hankering for; smaller and making life simpler with more time for the important things in life. And even having unpacked most clothes, there's still a little space to spare - they had foresight in the late '60's and an obsession for built-in wardrobes! Even quite liking the pink en-suite bathroom, complete with matching carpet and not-quite matching patterned wall tiles - the new avocado? And it does feel like a home again (obv without your beating heart, though still with your soul), and a more solid foundation for whatever the future is.

Only immediate concern is Martha being v territorial and barking at anyone that passes by - expect a noise abatement notice soon from the residents association. And re Martha I have a confession. The earliest I could book a dog groomer was three weeks. Anyway, I don’t think she looks too bad and she still has two ears and a tail. I dropped her off at puppy camp this morning and even Sam (she’s great isn't she!) didn’t notice.

Yesterday was a quiet time to sort things on my own a little. And visit you in the evening. You were hot and looked tired so they put a fan next to you. I spoke earlier to Angus too (best you can with a 5-second delay), who seems to have found his 'soul place' in Cuba. We talked about the Under Toad. Today we're off to Love Supreme. Alfie is on hand to help me sort your caravan. I'm a little intimidated about the responsibility for that. Tom joins later tonight. It all feels like a bit of a watershed moment.

And, oh, Naomi has a sweet confession to make too. I’ll let there do that….

This popped up on my FaceBook account this morning. Six years to the day since Claire, Jackie and Kate were staying at our place and exploring the beautiful Val de Bagnes on their bikes.

Time in the mountains always gives a sense of perspective and humility. It's fabulous that they're a passion shared by the entire Goldsmith clan.

The beautiful visitors' book that Claire made and gave us after her stay is a permanent presence on the sideboard in our apartment and and provides a reminder to us to follow Claire's example and carpe diem.

Popped in to Putney last night to see you , my beautiful friend. Jeremy came with me and between us it took quite a while to work out where the Devonshire Ward was!! We kept getting lost around the lovely old building! We had just been at the Royal Festival Hall for Jazz's Masters Graduation so were pleased we could get over to see you. Still lots of lovely creams to massage with, so we put on some music - (Falling Slowly by Naomi and Angus ) - and I massaged your hands and arms and your eye stayed open the entire time we played the song! The staff seem gorgeous and your room is nice and light and airy which was good to see. In August Cindy and I are coming up together and are spending 2 days up in London so that we can spend time with you. Just arrived back in Cornwall after taking the overnight sleeper. Keep fighting my friend. Lots of love and hugs xxxxxxx

On Thursday June 27th, Aunty Anne and cousin Emma enjoyed an afternoon with Claire on a day trip by train from North Yorkshire. We were so pleased to find her looking lovely as ever and observing us closely as we talked and read with her and Emma massaged her hands and feet. As it was a gloriously warm and sunny day we took her for a walk around the gardens twice, even needing to use the trendy sunhat . Between these outings we returned her to base to meet the therapists and go with them to an amazing, newly refurbished, large gymnasium in the basement, several lifts and corridors away. There Claire was assisted to the vertical by hoist and tilt table for quite a while , the lovely ladies carrying out various assessments and arm movements. Back on Devonshire ward we waited while she was put to bed, obviously tired by then, before sadly bidding her farewell. It was very reassuring to see our dear Claire being so well looked after by caring staff. Some of your family in the North will be back to see you again before long Claire - you and Team G are never far from our thoughts and prayers. Love from Anne and Emma. xx

In year 6 I managed to break my leg. Mum was due to go on one of her cycling endeavours in France the following day and selflessly asked me if she was still allowed to go in case I needed her. I saw no reason why Dad couldn't look after me - as at that age, beans on toast was a culinary treat - so of course I 'let' her go. I remember Dad bringing me in a card that she had written the following day, with evident tear marks smudging her signature writing - both in style and content. The card read something like: 'Leaving you when you need me most is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, and I'll come back at a moments notice if you want me to'. After 10 years I fully appreciate the emotional depth in what she said.

Saying goodbye and leaving you is consistently an incredibly difficult and uncomfortable thing to do Mum, especially today as I head to Cuba for 3 weeks.

This photo shows a keyring that Mum got me before I went away over my gap year and she was very specific about its meaning (I went on to recite this meaning to her when she lost her water bottle that she was unusually and perhaps unhealthily attached to one evening...). She said that it didn’t matter whether the key ring got lost, as the sentiment it stated and represented would always be present.

Loyle Carner released a new album a couple of months ago, and the final track ‘Dear Ben’ caught my attention today as I was sitting in the garden with a beer. In a poem written by Loyle Carner’s mother, she reads to him:
“Because love does not lessen by miles,
it's not locked out by doors or walls
but reinforced in thought and heart.
It cannot be lost like a key or a sock
or left behind in a box.
It is present in each and every breath
and flows deep with every beat and deed.
It may not be your presence
but it's your essence that remains”

I’ll think of you whilst finishing a Colada in the Caribbean evening sun,

"Do one thing every day that scares you". I gave Claire a card with that Eleanor Roosevelt quote on our 15th wedding anniversary. She stuck it to the wall, next to the kitchen sink, where it remains. Doing some 'Claire admin' last night I found this. Just before she met Naomi in NZ earlier this year and unbeknown to us, she decided to follow our daughter's footsteps and do a skydive. Just in case it went wrong, she wrote a short note and left it in her hotel. Then shared it with us after the successful jump. Obv quite poignant!

Well, you'd have loved Elton. Amongst all the outfits, I know you'd have shone. And probably first up dancing in the aisles! With Naomi away Tom was a pretty good 'plus 1'. Alfie and Izzy came to see you earlier. Then did an Ikea swoop ahead of moving into their new home. V excited. Naomi I think is nice and settled back in Sydney. Obv tough. She sent me a message with a picture of her outfit before going out. "I can't show this to Mum; is this ok?". Sweet. Angus survived climbing with Tom in Chamonix and only a couple of scares .He's booked his flights to Cuba and sorted studying next year in Amsterdam. One more essay to hand in then I pick him up from Sheffield. Good to have him back for a few days too, as I've decided to move back to Corrie Beag. Gives us a bit of breathing space. It'll also force me to sort a few things here as its just as you left it before going out for that ride. More importantly, and I forgot to tell you last week, Gavin and Stacey is back for Christmas. You always say you want me to be more like Mick; well here's my chance, apron on and sorting Christmas dinner! It'll come around all too quick. And in the words of the Rocketman... Hi Claire, great to see you in your new digs yesterday. It was a nice surprise to be asked to take you out of the ward although myself and Mum were a bit nervous and did a few test runs down the corridor first! Shame about the rain but when the weather improves you’ll have plenty of opportunity to get into those gardens and soak up some fresh air and sunshine. Keep fighting! Ben xx

I spent a lovely time with Mum visiting Claire yesterday. Here's a photo of us waiting for Claire to join us on the balcony. We had taken notice of Naomi’s instructions, so Mum decided to brush Claire’s hair. Despite spending hours “doing” Claire’s hair when she was a little girl, Mum had lost the knack when it came to putting her hair back into a ponytail but a nurse came to the rescue. Mum then decided to try putting some face cream on Claire, but the vast array of lotions and potions caused a challenge as we couldn’t work out what they were all for, however once again the nurse came to the rescue.
You can see just how wonderful the staff at St. George’s are and I would like to say a huge thank you to them all for the wonderful care that they have provided to Claire. I will be quite sad not to visit St. George’s next time I visit Claire, but I trust that Claire’s move to Putney will mark the start of a new and positive chapter. By way of an indication, I was convinced that I sensed a spark of my little sister returning when I came to depart and say goodbye. Don’t ask me how I knew ... just call it a big brother’s intuition!

A surprise letter just arrived. Claire studied for her 4-yr Typography Degree at Reading, graduating in 1987. I did Land Management and left in 1983. So we just missed each other (not sure I’d have got a look-in then anyway!). Helen and Clare, who visit regularly, were her Typography. 'partners in crime'. Claire shared a house with Ginny, another regular visitor, who met her husband Peter at Reading. Yesterday, several of Claire’s Edgbaston High School friends came. A positive to come from all of this is a reminder for the importance of these trusted, deep-rooted relationships. (and I've no idea why any pictures I load seem to do so sideways...)

I would like to say a massive heart-felt thanks to all those of you who have so generously donated to my "Walking for Claire" challenge. Much to my amazement I'm already over 60% towards my target. Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised by all those of you who know Claire. She is a truly wonderful person and her personality has touched so many lives. With just over 10 days now before Kate, Oliver and myself embark on our adventure - "Walking for Claire", I will endeavour to keep you all updated.

Ah my lovely friend, I came to see you yesterday and was amazed, though not surprised, by how beautiful you looked. In particular, FAB nails! Lovely to see Naomi, Alfie and Izzy … all part of the extraordinary Team G looking after you while you navigate your way through this. I filled you in on all our news from Stamford, and will be back to update you just as soon as I can get down to London again. Dear Claire, James, Tom, Alfie, Naomi, Angus , & little Martha, it’s taken me a while to write a message on here but that’s not through lack of intention! All the lovely messages of support are so moving it’s hard to know what to say that hasn’t already been said. I can’t quite believe it’s been 6 weeks since Claire’s accident-not a day has passed that we haven’t been thinking of you all and following any news/updates on this blog. This weekend I have thought about you all more than normal-it feels like a landmark weekend-6 wks, your wedding anniversary and celebrating Norma’s birthday. Although Claire’s life has taken an unprecedented turn, her world is continuing to move around her through you-her family, and she remains at the very centre of that. Your resilience and strength is a force to behold; the love you surround her with is inspirational. She would be so proud of her gorgeous brood. Continue to live life to the full & have those adventures-I can almost hear her say! Claire’s future is all the more bright because of you šŸ’— Sending lots of love and positive thoughts,(& some hugs) hopefully see you all again soon, Emma & family xxx

Walking for Claire.
In a few weeks’ time I will be setting off to walk the second half of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk with Kate and Oliver. Only a few weeks before Claire’s tragic accident, we had been starting to make plans for Claire to join us. I was so looking forward to my little sister sharing our adventure with us, and I have therefore decided to dedicate our challenge to her. I am sure that all those of you who have visited Claire will agree, that the amazing NHS staff at St. George’s Hospital have been doing a wonderful job of caring for Claire, so by way of a small thank you I would like to use this opportunity to raise much needed funds for the St. George’s Hospital Charity

Hi Claire Ginny, Millie and I popped in to see you yesterday on a beautiful late Spring day. Henny and Bella in the middle of exams so couldn’t come but send their love. We had a good chat, wrote a few lines in your visitors’ book and ate some of your jelly snakes - thank you! Had a lovely chat to Tom, Angus and Francis but unfortunately missed James and Naomi. See you all soon. Lots of love Peter, Ginny and Millie xxx

Hello Claire...just sitting here with Heidi & Trevor looking at the somewhat yellowed prompt cards of the wedding speech Trevor gave 28 years ago at the request of your Dad. There are so many beautiful words about you, but we were struck by the reference in the speech to what your name Claire means: "bright, full of life & bringer of joy & happiness". You've certainly been full of life & brought joy & happiness in to so many lives, ours included. Love from Trevor, Heidi & Sue xxx

Well what can I say!! Claire has been beautifully looked after since I last visited. Nicely washed hair, glowing skin and soft hands - gorgeous painted nails - can you paint nails now James?? - excellent job!! The nurses are incredible humans looking after Claire with such care and kindness. I spent most of the day chatting, singing and massaging. There was a beautiful sunset over St George's this evening. Just lovely. Off for a prosecco now. Love to all the Goldsmiths. xxxx

Hi Claire, I read James's last post and thought how astonished you would be to know that James will be responsible for hair and skin care whileĀ  Naomi is in Aus, I would be too if I hadn't witnessed his training from Naomi on Sunday!! It is just another example of how people are pitching in in unexpected ways, I am sure James will do a good job now he has had gold star training and I was paying attention too! You have a team to be proud of and who are all so proud of you.Ā  See you soon, lots of love, Emma xxx

Don’t mind admitting honey that I’m not liking Mondays so much right now. When life around for most is back to normal again. And ours isn’t; ‘a new normal’ - more for another time. Last night Naomi and I got the train to Sheffield to see Angus. And hand deliver his pre-exam good luck card that you would always send. Hope we wrote the right words. He (as they all) have shown immense courage through this. You’d be beyond proud. I cooked a risotto (obv!) with shrimps (a first). Angus didn’t feel so good this morning. Everyone else ok so think I’m in the clear.

This afternoon Tom and Frances took us climbing at Stanage Edge. I didn’t take part. Either lacking energy or a new, higher sense of self-preservation. Naomi abseiled, which made me nervous too. Don’t need anything else right now! Instead I watched in pretend calm and took Martha for a walk along the ridge. On a lead of course.

Now we’re on our way back to London. We’ll see you tomorrow. Mel is coming too. And will expect high standards of course. Last Thursday Jan, Dawn and Heather visited. I honestly thought the ward was thinking ‘Loose Women’ had gone on tour, what with all the glam, chat and attitude. You’d have loved it. We went for supper, which was already in your diary. Just not in Tooting. Then Naomi put me through intensive nail, hair and skincare training, for when she goes back to Aus. So Mel should be happy. As can be.

Lovely to spend some time with my little sister earlier this week, and reading The Shepherd's Life to her. Fantastic news about being accepted for assessment at Putney Hospital ... a very small baby step but nevertheless fantastic news and it certainly cheered me up.

So we've just had a lovely message from our friends at Tenerife Bike Training; the Delgado brothers. And Eloy of course, who rode so much with you when sweating up and then flowing down Mount Teide. It reminded me of them giving you their ‘rider of the week award’ - for your attitude and perseverance - as we ate their mother’s legendary paella! They send their kisses, saying “we remember always Claire being strong of mind and gentle heart”.

Talking of ‘flow’ I can’t find the London Marathon photos (I can’t find lots of things!). I did though find this one of you running free on the South Downs. Perhaps where you are most at one.

dear family all, great news that Claire's gastrostomy is now inserted with no apparent untoward effects on her from the surgery. You will be looking forward to seeing her full face again soon when the nasal tube can be removed- good progress. So pleased that Claire continues to open her left eye - it might be a good idea to diary this in some way, frequency and trying to link it to events around her and people speaking, also any limb movements especially the hand squeeze Paul felt. You are probably doing all this. Your observations will certainly help the therapists and doctors assessing her progress as her steps forward may be tiny and subtle but still significant. Think of you all so often and hope we can get down from Yorkshire again soon to see you all. God bless, love from (aunty) Anne.xx

Morning honey. In Boston for 48hrs. Remember coming here on a business trip with you, must be 30yrs almost to the day. Before we were officially a couple. The client was very funny about it when he found out! All a little different now and looking forwards to getting back. Did 30mins in the hotel gym; you know how much I love them (not). Give me fresh air and terra firma any day. Perhaps tmw when I’ve got my bearings. There’s even a screen to read on the front of the jogging machine. So I stared at an Albanian newsfeed, not that it mattered through the sweat and without reading glasses. That FB memories thing is a mixed blessing. This 3yrs ago and when we went to Budapest. Think I said something like you not always being mud, sweat and grazes when on the bike. Always. Xx

I remember well this bank holiday Sunday last year my dear. We'd stayed at Gareth and Katie's stunning place on the Isle of Wight the night before. Katie was less than happy with his BBQ technique and consigned him to the wine. Some things were meant to be! This before doing the round the Island randonne. Great day. Before we set off you said 'stop'. Let's take this photo (though not sideways, as uploaded). Think I said words along the lines of 'why, we need to get on'. You always know best. The next day of course was Alfie's birthday. All his mates turned up for the usual gathering at which you were as usual the discrete hostess. And as they always expected! I hid myself away and wrote my mother's eulogy, for later that week. Little different this year, if no less poignant x

Hi Claire,
I’m going through photos and came across some absolute corkers from when we met up in Vietnam in 2017 – what a laugh we had! From cocktails on rooftop bars, shots in the jungle with the locals (pic), cycling through the forest on slightly dodgey bikes to wading through mud to catch fish – always up for a laugh and an adventure aunty Claire, you made this trip so much fun.
James, Tom, Alfie, Naomi and Angus are being absolute troopers in this extremely difficult time, I know you’ll be so so proud.
As I said to Naomi when I came to visit you with mum, you bring glam to the fam and you’re still bringing it!
I’m thinking of you everyday and continue to send you all my love xxx

Dear Goldsmith Family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Claire's tragic accident. It was only a few weeks ago that we were chatting in my Pilates class about the dangers of the road and how being a cyclist makes you a better driver . I can't quite believe that situation she faces. She is a remarkable lady and extremely strong and I hope her strength will exude even in her unconscious state - helping you all to get through the recovery ahead. Sending you well wishes and strength. x Anaya

So shocked to hear the news, but heartened to see and hear all the love and support that is wrapped around you Claire. I have been on your side of the equation before and based on the universal truth that women are stronger than men, I have all the hope in the world for you. I am equally lucky to be married to a wonderful woman who guides me and our 4 children. And I know what strength, dignity and class she showed shouldering life and caring for the whole family during my recovery. So my final thoughts are for James, the family and the dog. Keep walking, keep cycling, keep laughing and keep crying. Its all good for the soul. And the Goldsmith's soul runs deep and strong.

I found this photo of us from 2010 - how quickly the last 9 years have gone, it only feels like yesterday we were walking down Sidmouth seafront where this photo was taken! I really do have the best and most beautiful godmother. Looking forward to seeing you again soon when you are feeling better. Lots of love, Bella xx

Another day darling. Don't mind admitting it was a bit difficult getting up and going this morning. The drama of the London Marathon is happening just yards away from the flat. The noise of helicopters used to excite me. It also reminded me of that time you stepped up to run in someone else's place at just a few weeks notice. Me chasing you around the streets of London with all the kids who were so young at the time. I sort of thought you had the better part of the deal! Then you bouncing in comfortably under 4hrs with a beaming smile. Need to find the photo. I need to find lots of photos. x

Dear Claire,
So lovely to spend time with you yesterday.
I think this Dior quote is so true for you, dear friend. You always live your life to the full, with love, energy and meaning.
Hope you enjoy the photographs we left with you and we look forward to seeing you again soon. All our love to you and your amazing family,

Morning honey. Just taken Martha for a walk. Still a little subdued but adjusting to her urban life for now. She met a gorgeous Puerto Rican rescue dog - even better still a squirrel and all the usual excitement that goes with that! Sue kindly brought Heidi and Trevor to see you. As considerate and inspirational as ever. They had some photos, from summer 1996. One of me holding a baby Naomi. And this of you cuddling Alfie. Inseparable from Teddy of course, who's had his own traumas (how many times have you had to stitch and patch him together??) but still going strong. See you a little later x

Claire, just home from visiting you in your new ward and thought I’d share how beautiful you do look! It was good to see that some machines had been removed and therefore this time I was able to give you a nice hand massage , I did attempt a nice foot rub but those dashing blue medical socks of yours got in the way a little! Hopefully on our next visit you’ll be awake ( 3rd time lucky?! 😘) see you next week xx

Dearest Claire,
I thought you might like this photograph? Here we are looking rather glamorous for the Whiteknights' Formal, 1983. Our dresses may be timeless but maybe not the 80s' perms!
Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery - we shall make it to the Dior Exhibition this summer!
Peter, Millie, Henny and Bella send you all their love; we are thinking of you and looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Not quite the birthday we'd planned eh honey? Emma, Annie, Steve and Ellen joined us for supper just around the corner. So did Andy Bristow. The barman kindly asked if we'd moved in locally, having seen so much of us recently! Waking this morning and listening to Sibelius #5 (obv) I'm reflecting on the extraordinary resilience of the kids. How they're holding it together and behaving always with dignity, comforting your many shattered visitors. And why. Because of the way you ensured the family unit was always working and ready to adapt; subtly watching, listening, encouraging and fine-tuning. My tool set and roll of duct tape seems a little crude in comparison! Missing you x

James, thank you so much for giving an update. We have been desperate to know how Claire has been but did not want to call as aware you need time for yourselves. We have been thinking of you all constantly hoping to God that Claire makes a swift recovery. I cannot imagine how this has been for you all. When walking with Claire a couple of weeks ago she had mentioned how amazing her mum was to recover from illness against all odds - and I truly believe this will be the case with Claire. Dear James, thinking of you in your little flat, waking up and as we all do - hoping and praying that someday soon Claire will as well. Had updates yesterday from Tom and Paul -wonderful that Claire has made so much improvement having completed her face surgery and come off the ventilator. The care she is getting seems second to none, very reassuring, so we have to keep willing her resting brain cells to heal, regroup and bring Claire back to us. We know the Goldsmith team are up to the challenge of helping Claire through this . All our love to you James and all the family., from Anne and Geoff in Yorkshire. xx

Last Monday Notre Dame burned. Great buildings deeply rooted in our consciousness have throughout their history been subject to catastrophe, intervention and change. It's called culture. It made me think about the quote often attributed to Charles Darwin: "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable ..". Whether he said it or not, I like it. And think of it as soul.
