About Dave

27 Jan 2022: our beloved Pegs/Dave suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke on the first day of our skiing holiday in Italy - Day 1 of his full retirement. We were just walking to the chair lift to go up for our first run. The medics here are amazing and within 90 minutes he was whisked off by air ambulance. I followed by car - some truly amazing friends dropped what they were doing and drove me down. By the time we arrived (which is about 45 minutes away by car) he'd had a CT scan and was already undergoing emergency surgery to relieve the pressure in the brain. The CT scan revealed a catastrophic bleed on the right hand side of his brain. The first words the neurosurgeon said to me was: he is very ill, he is in a coma, there will be "some weakness on the left hand side" and there was a 50/50 chance of pulling through the surgery. But our Pegs is made of tough stuff and some 3hr 45 mins later he was taken through to ICU where I was able to see him very briefly. The surgeon had removed the majority of the blood clot but not quite all. We were told that the next few hours were critical. Critical or not, he got through the first night. Due to Covid I am unable to visit.
