Update

Fantastic news!!! Ross has been given the all clear to come home and is being discharged today. Just... waiting for the call to go and collect him. His accident happened 13 weeks ago to the day and we’ve had some real ups and downs on his road to recovery . Still further to go yet but we’re so glad he’s coming home and we can properly help him! Thanks so much to everyone for all the support we’ve had from you all. It’s helped so so much. Loads of love, Jane xxxxRead moreless

Update

Hello again!!! Great news in the last few days, as after chatting to Dr Shakespeare it’s sounding ve...ry likely that at next week’s review meeting on the 18th, Ross will get the go ahead to come back home and continue his rehab from here. Really hoping that this will be the case and not sure how quickly it will happen after Thursday or exactly what needs to be in place, but we’re all very excited. He’s made more improvements over the last week and has really had enough of being in hospital so think the time is right for him to leave. We had a lovely window visit with him again yesterday and supplied him with plenty of snacks to keep him going for this week. Looking forward to being able to properly feed him up once he’s home!!! Lots of love, Jane xxxRead moreless

Update

Hello everyone! Sorry it’s been such a long time between updates. Everything has slowed as Ross has ...begun his rehab in Preston. After a week of assessments the therapists, Ross and I (joining in by phone) had a group meeting to set some goals for the next four weeks, which they’re currently working towards. Ross has been finding it hard to be in hospital for so long and we’ve been chatting a lot over FaceTime to relieve the boredom. He has been getting outside in to the courtyard garden there on occasion and I think that really helps too. We drove down today to drop off some snack supplies and had a great ‘visit’ through the window. Still a way to go but improving all the time! Lots of love to everyone XxxRead moreless

Update

A bit delayed, but here’s Ross’ up-to-date hospital address for anyone who needs it - Barton War...d Royal Preston Hospital Sharoe Green Lane North Fulwood Preston Lancashire PR2 9HT All still going well. Ross has been having assessments from the various therapy teams and they’ve starting doing some exercises with him. Hoping to find out a bit more when I speak to both them and the doctor later this week. Hope you’re all safe and well. Love, Jane xxRead moreless

Update

After my last update on Tuesday we’ve had some fantastic developments here. Instead of being moved t...o Lancaster Infirmary as we were expecting, Ross was moved yesterday afternoon to the Neuro rehab ward in the Royal Preston!! This is great news as he can now get going straight away with the therapy he needs, supported by the brilliant team that work there. We drove down today to drop off his new iPad and he happened to be in a private room (as he’d had a bit of a temp yesterday and had to have a COVID test) which was on the ground floor, so we spent an hour chatting to him through the window!!! Was great actually getting to see him so close and to talk to him in person. Really made our day! His temperature had gone and he was feeling fine. The COVID test came back negative so he’s now back on the rehab ward proper and getting settled. It’s hugely encouraging to see how much progress he’s made over the last few days. I’ll pop his current address up on her tomorrow when I’ve got the exact ward name. He’s now got access to Spotify so will hopefully be listening to the playlist everyone’s contributed to soon! Hugs to everyone and here’s a link to this https://www.headway.org.uk/about-headway/events-and-conferences/hats-for-headway-day/ in case anyone fancies joining in tomorrow. XxxxRead moreless

Update

Hello everyone! Just checking in to let you know that Ross is continuing to do really well. We’ve al...l been chatting to him on a regular basis each day and though he’s still got a long way to go , he’s definitely getting a bit less muddled, especially on a morning. Unfortunately he is still waiting for a place to come up in the Preston Neuro Rehab ward and as he’s no longer in need of acute care, they’ll probably be moving him over to Lancaster Infirmary for a while. This means he won’t be seeing the same therapists he’s been having sessions with in Preston, which is a bit of a shame, but on the plus side I might be able to take him food down like I did before and maybe catch a glimpse of him through a window! If anyone was about to send a card you might be best holding off for a few days. Hope everyone’s keeping safe and well and thanks hugely for all the lovely messages. You’re all superstars!!! Update

Just wanted to say a big thank you for all the photos that people have been posting in here. The spe...ech therapist called me today to say she’d been using them in a session with Ross this morning and that they’ve been really useful. He’s been on good form again and FaceTiming us a lot, so clearly managing to overcome his dislike for Apple products! Seriously though it’s been lovely talking to him more today and seeing him chatting to all the nurses. The doctor said that she’s pleased with how he’s responded to the cranioplasty and that the wound is healing well. I’ll update again in a few days time. Hope everyone has a lovely, long bank holiday weekend. Lots of love, Jane. XxRead moreless

Update

Hi guys. Afraid we’ve had another slight set back. Ross seemed to be very tired yesterday when spoke... to him and it turns out there’s been a build up of fluid between the skull flap and the brain membrane. They’re having to operate again to resolve this so he’s back in theatre this morning. Hope this will be sorted quickly and he’ll be back on the road to recovery soon. He’s certainly keeping us on our toes. I’ll let you know how he’s got on later. XxxRead moreless

Hello all and thanks for all your lovely messages of support and comments! So nice to know you’re al...l thinking of us. The hospital have worked really quickly to produce the titanium plate for the craneoplasty and it arrived on the ward much sooner than they’d expected. It’s looking like Ross will have the operation later today which is a couple of weeks sooner than they’d thought. This is great news as will protect the brain better, helps psychologically and can also help with seizures, cognition and alertness. . It’s a fairly straightforward procedure and should take our 90 mins. I’ll let you know how he’s got on later but any positive vibes very welcome this afternoon! Loads of love to you all. Update

Hello all!! I finally got to talk to one of the neurologists looking after Ross. He confirmed that ...they are investigating for sub-clinical seizures because of Ross having periods of unresponsiveness - less eye opening, not speaking. They’ve scanned him again and that’s come back clear and they’ve done some blood tests (didn’t say what for) but they’re all negative. He’s been given some medication for the seizures but the next step is to give him an EEG which will confirm their suspicions. Then they can adjust his medication or add/replace it with another seizure medication. What they want to do also is the cranioplasty, as this often helps a lot with seizures. No real science as to why, but they see it often and think it’s possibly that the shape of the brain has an effect on its function. There are 3-4 people waiting for this op but Ross will be top of the list. Plate has been ordered but it still might be a month before they do it. He described him as being mildly confused but eating and can walk to the loo with assistance. He’s wearing his helmet. So good to get things clarified by the doctor at last. I also emailed PALS last night and got a lovely phone call this morning from them. She confirmed that the hospital has had a donation of iPads and has contacted the lead person in IT who’s in charge of rolling them out. She’s going to see if they can get one to Ross as a priority. So also very good news if it comes off. Lots of love to you all, Jane and the kids. Xxxx Read moreless

Update

Ross has settled in ok on the neurological ward at Royal Preston. Had a good night with no seizures.... He ate his dinner well this evening and had been drinking plenty of fluids. The nurse said he’s still a bit muddled, but knew he was in Preston and had come from Lancaster so thought that sounded positive. Hope he has another good night tonight. XxRead moreless

Update

Taken a free backwards steps over the last few days unfortunately. On Saturday night Ross seemed t...o become unresponsive so he was taken for a brain scan and moved to the acute frailty unit. They were concerned that pressure was perhaps building again in the brain but the scan came back negative for that and he came round ok. He was moved back to the ward he was on, only for it to happen again last night. They now think he’s having sub-acute clinical seizures and today have managed to secure him a bed in the neurological ward in Preston. Definitely the best place for him to be until we get to the bottom of this. He was sat up today chatting, drinking apple juice and eating a banana so he’s still ok. Thanks for all the lovely messages of support people have been posting!!! Lots of love, Jane and the kids. XxxRead moreless

Update

Ross has been sleeping a lot over the last few days. The nurse says he’s also been eating more food.... Possibly a sign he’s starting to come out of the post traumatic amnesia. I did take more food down to the hospital today but didn’t get a wave as he was sleeping. It’s sounding likely that they might move him into a community care setting next week but I’ll know more about that on Monday. Read moreless

Update

After posting yesterday’s update I managed to speak to Dr Shakespeare who heads the neuro rehab ward... in Preston. They had been told to close the ward and discharge all medically fit patients in order to free up beds for COVID patients. Demand in Preston hasn’t been as high as anticipated so he’s applied to reopen the ward and Is just waiting for a response. He is really hopeful that this will happen and they can transfer Ross over soon. He did say he’s not quite ready for rehab just yet but he is in touch with doctors and ward manager in Lancaster and receiving updates on him. He reassured me that rehab will begin in some setting for Ross at the right time, whatever the outcome. He was brilliant to talk to. Very positive, patient and caring. Read moreless

Update

Hi everyone. Sorry I haven’t sent out an update in a while. It’s been difficult to get any detailed ...information on how he’s actually doing other than anecdotes on his daily well being. I have been in touch with the charity Headway and spoke to a specialist neuro trauma nurse on Monday. She was brilliant and seemed to think that Ross was doing very well given the timeframe. She says he’s currently suffering from post traumatic amnesia and until this lifts (there’s nothing they can do to speed this process up), they can’t really start the rehab. The ward he is on in Lancaster are really just making sure that he’s comfortable and safe, but should be assessing him every day so they can say when he is ready for rehab. Having finally spoken to a doctor on his ward today it doesn’t sound like they are doing that. They think he is ready to go back to Preston to the rehab ward there, but have been told it is currently closed. I’ve been given the number of the consultant running the clinic so will be following that up shortly to find out what’s going on. We have had no success in video calling Ross since Saturday. Took his charger down and then it turns out that he has managed to lose his phone. They are still looking for it. We are however taking food down to him everyday and after dropping it off, they have been bringing him to the window. He’s moving but unsteadily and talks to us clearly, though often it’s hard to hear him as he is in the first floor and his voice is quiet. He waves and has given us the thumbs up. So steady progress, but feel I’m going to have to fight his corner to get the proper care he needs. People keep asking about sending cards and messages which is lovely of you. Don’t think he’s quite ready yet but I know he’ll love to receive them when he is and I’ll keep you posted on that. We’re all doing ok and keeping strong for Ross. Thanks for all your earlier messages. Sending loads of love, Jane and the kids. Xxx Read moreless

Update

From 12/4/20 Hi everyone. After an unsuccessful attempt at trying to talk to Ross on Friday (he was... too unsettled) we finally managed to not only speak to him, but also see him yesterday. This was all thanks to a wonderful nurse called Alan who’s not even normally on the rehab ward! He let Ross use his phone so we could FaceTime him. He recognised all of us and said he was doing ok and that he missed us all. He looked tired and had two black eyes, but the swelling on his face had really gone down. He is still confused and tired quickly but it was so great to finally see him. Hoping now we can do this very regularly and it’ll help his recovery. As always, thanks for thinking of us all. It means so much. XxxxRead moreless

Update

From 8/4/20 Hi everyone. Just sending on a quick update on Ross. Think he’s keeping everyone on the... ward busy as he is wanting to be active and move around a lot, but still way too unsteady on his feet to get around on his own yet. He’s been out in the sunshine for a wheel around in a wheelchair and having chats with all of the staff there. My favourite today’s was he was talking to the housekeeper about reading the Guardian and doing crossword, so she went down to the shop and bought him one! The nurses are being so amazing, having to bring in shower gel and toothpaste etc from their homes, as we’re not allowed to drop anything off. Today we’re sending him letters and photos and providing that goes well, I’m sure they’d be ok with other people writing to him too, but I’ll let you know. The other good news is that they’ve retrieved his phone from the general office and I’m posting his charger to them, so we might be able to video call him soon. Again, I’ll let you know how that goes. Still not on the rehab ward yet but hopefully soon! Thanks so much for all the love. Jane and the kids xxxxxRead moreless

Update

From 4/4/20 Today’s nibblet prized from the Neuro Ward earlier - More good news today. Ross has be...en sitting up in a chair and even walked (with the nurse) to the bathroom, where he spoke, asking her not to come in with him! He’s pulled his feed tube out (again 🙄), so they’ve been giving him some soft food, which he managed to eat a bit of. Excellent progress I think. Thanks everyone 😘😘😘Read moreless

Update

From 3/4/20 Had a really positive call with the sister on Ross’ ward this morning. She said they’re... wanting to move him into the rehab centre as soon as possible. This week or early next. Just need a bed for him. She also said he’s speaking but not very clearly. Thought that was such good need. Mentioned him moving a lot still but really pleased with that and said he’s ‘really starting to come round’. Really cheered us up here after yesterday and not hearing much. 🎉🎉🎉Read moreless

Update

From 1/4/20 Hello everyone! Just a quick update to let you know that Ross has now been moved out of... the ICU and on to the neurological ward. He only got there just after 7pm so not much more news, but the nurse did say that he’s trying to get up all the time. She said this was a good thing and it’s the very still ones that they worry about! So another positive step forward. Thanks all for your lovely messages. Much love, Jane and the gang. Update

From 31/3 Hi all. Another quick update on Ross. He’s still in the ICU as they want to keep him on... the blood pressure medication a bit longer. He’s been moving quite a bit and slightly agitated. They’re taking the line out from his brain that’s been monitoring the pressure and hope that will make him a bit more comfortable. Sounds like he’s responding to a certain degree when asked to open his eyes/stick his tongue out but not fully yet. The nurse did say he said ‘ouch’ when the doctor took his dressing off to examine his head. It’ll be small steps everyday now (fingers crossed) so don’t worry if I don’t manage an update some days. I know you’re thinking of us and it means a lot. Loads of love, Jane and the gang.Read moreless

Update

And also from 30/3 Hi everyone. Just off the phone to the doctor. Big step forward today as Ross is... now off the ventilator and breathing on his own. He’s moving around well and able to turn onto his side. He’s maintaining good oxygen levels and they’re taking him off the blood pressure medication. No sedation medication now either. He hasn’t spoken yet but has opened his eyes briefly. They’re hoping to move him to the neurosurgery ward tomorrow. He’s likely to be there for several weeks/months. It’s a bit unknown what the extent of recovery will be at this time but we know it will be a long slog, looking like between 18-24 months. It is a severe injury but in Ross’s favour he’s under 60 so the brain still maintains a good degree of plasticity. And he is Ross, which I think is possibly a bigger factor for a positive outcome! Taking it day by day and grateful for all improvements. Sure all your positives vibes are helping tremendously. Can’t thank everyone enough and sending loads of love, Jane, Evie, Elsa and Jake and all the rest of Ross’ lovely family.Read moreless

Update

From Monday 30/3 Not lots to report just now. He’s still stable. They’re reducing his sedation slow...ly this afternoon every every hour so we’re phoning between 5-6 to get the proper update. He’s moved good right arm again and was bending his leg while I was talking to the nurse. So that’s good news. Read moreless

Update

Morning everyone. Just thought I’d update you all together on here. Ross had been stable overnight. ...He’s got a slight temp which they’re keeping an eye on. They won’t do anything with him until tomorrow morning at the earliest. Good news he’s come through the op and still ok. Will be happier when 48 hours have passed tbh. Jo’s come down for a bit but we can’t go and visit anyway. Love to all. XxxRead moreless
